The following information will help help you to understand how many visits you will have with us during your pregnancy and what we will do for you at each visit. We have also included a list of current over the counter medications that are considered safe in pregnancy.

Scheduling
   
0 - 28 wks every 4 weeks  
28 - 35 wks every 2 weeks  
36 - 40 wks weekly visits  

1st Trimester (conception to 14 weeks)
1st visit
(5-7 wks)
  • Confirmation of pregnancy with urine pregnancy test (UPT) if necessary, ultrasound (to confirm due date), brief exam, and history. OB packet given for review (discussion of tetra screen, cystic fibrosis screening, CMV, toxoplasmosis, exercise, sexual activity, physicians on call, medications safe in pregnancy, and answering service).
  • OB labs (collected in our office – blood draw and urine sample).
2nd visit
(7-10 wks)
  • Complete medical history, physical exam, pap smear, review of OB labs, review of future course of pregnancy. Meeting with business manager and insurance manager.
2nd Trimester (14 – 28 weeks)
16 – 20 wks
  • Tetra screen blood draw, if age < 35 (collected in our office).
  • Amniocentesis, if age > 35 or other genetic risk factors.
20 – 24 wks
  • Anatomy scan (fetal sex determination if visible) usually at Methodist MFM, 9th Floor Smith Tower.
24 wks
  • Upon completion of this apt., if you are Rh negative, you will be given a Lab requisition for The Methodist Hospital. You will hold on to this form until your 28 week visit whereas you will need to plan to arrive 30 min or more prior to this apt. You will go to the 5th floor, Smith Tower,The Methodist Hospital lab first and get your blood type retested. They will then give you the Rhogam. Bring this medication to our office and we will administer the injection.
3rd Trimester (28 – 40 weeks)
28 wks
  • Rhogam administration if blood type is Rh negative Rh(-) (See 24 week directions).
  • Glucose test, (1hr test, no fasting necessary) and Complete Blood Count draw for anemia.
  • Review preterm labor, Braxton hicks, and kick counts.
  • Choose pediatrician and tell physician.
  • Register and tour The Methodist Hospital or St. Lukes.
  • Sign up for Childbirth classes.
35 – 36 wks
  • Group B Streptococcus culture (to determine the need for antibiotics in labor).
37 – 41 wks
  • Term pregnancy
39 – 40 wks
  • Repeat cesarean section if previous C/S, desiring repeat C/S.
40 + wks
  • Biophysical profile (BPP) and amniotic fluid index (AFI) by ultrasound to determine fetal well being in posterm pregnancy.

Try to avoid medicines in the first trimester (till 13-weeks), but if you need medicine, keep to this list. Please call the medical staff if your symptoms do not resolve in 24-48 hrs., especially if you have a fever, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Please contact the medical staff before taking any medications not on this list.
